Catfish 1971 Live Catfish

Genre: Blues-Rock
Rate: 236 kbps VBR / 44100
Time: 00:44:20
Size: 74,69 MB

Album Notes:
It's been a long time full of sound checks half-drunk sodas and half-smoked cigarettes. Gettin' the mikes right and gettin' the lights lit; Watchin' the other groups drinkin' beer and watchin' Harry sleep.
Ready to roll
"CATFISH".......................
(Harry on piano stage left Jim on drums stage centre then Dennis then Dallas with Bob up front)
Bob Hodge and his friends smilin' "Hello" into "Nowhere to run" Band's gettin' off good and the audience stomps and claps and cheers into "Nowhere" and then into "Money" Motown music for motown people.
Into "300 pound fat Mama" the old song that lets 'em stretch out and lets the chick give 'em a little something t'keep 'em goin' an' gives the crowd a chance t'react an' loosen up.
Catfish is playin' home ground the same home ground that bought the first Catfish album an' that has kept 'em alive for a year since then. An' the crowd knows it. They're pullin' out the stops an" sweatin a lot. Here's a thing called "Mississippi River" An' the Eastown's coming apart. It's Rock 'n' Roll time in Detroit an' when it's Rock an' Roll time in Detroit it's a good time to be in. "Letter t'Nixon" is more Rock 'n' Roll time an' people are gettin' crazy an' shakin' ass all the way through to the end
Jumpin' on stage an' clappin' an' singin' an' bein' alive. People in Detroit come alive a lot an' they like to Rock 'n' Roll
So Catfish gives 'em "Whole lotta shakin'."
And that's how it was: raunchy and dirty Rock 'n' Roll Music t'sweat by.

Ibro Lolov & His Gypsy Orchestra 1998 Gypsy Music From Bulgaria, Vol. 1

Genre: Gypsy
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:57:24
Size: 131,28 MB

The liner notes state that it is difficult to tell Bulgarian gypsy music from Bulgarian music in general. This adds further confirmation to an observation that wherever they go, the gypsies tend to assimilate to the music of the locals -- which they then proceed to play with great verve and proficiency.
This album consists of instrumentals with a few vocal numbers mixed in. The instruments include the accordion (which is generally the lead and which is played by Lolov), the violin (which occasionally takes over the lead), guitar, bass, and drums. The pace is fast but usually not frenetic like that of other Eastern European gypsy bands. A good example of this is "Sofiyski Tantz (Dance From Sofia)," an instrumental which, like a couple of the other numbers, sounds a little bit Middle Eastern and a little bit like a fast tango. Another fun instrumental is "Koshnitcharka (Basket Maker)," which has a real lilt to it and provides variety. The vocalists would not pass muster on American Idol, but they impress with their sincerity. This disc can be recommended to any fan of gypsy or Bulgarian music.

Boz Scaggs & Band 1971 Boz Scaggs & Band

review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
After the burnished, mellow Moments, Boz Scaggs put some grit back into his music with this third album, Boz Scaggs & Band. Not that he got down and dirty -- his blue-eyed soul and funk is still sleek and stylish, music for uptown parties, not downtown juke joints. But Scaggs gave his band equal billing on the title here because they carry equal weight on Boz Scaggs & Band. It's a true band album, showcasing the group's tight interplay as much as it does Scaggs' vocals.
Sometimes, the band almost dominates the proceedings too much, as they do on "Runnin' Blue," where they're as splashy as a Vegas big band. Such excesses are balanced by the nimble "Up to You," this album's irresistible foray into country -- something that was a regular Boz feature at this point -- and the brief, breezy "Here to Stay," which helps keep things light and casual. But the best thing about Boz & Band is hearing that band play, particularly on "Flames of Love" and "Why Why," where they get down low, playing funky rock and soul that holds its own with Little Feat's Meters-inspired grooves.

JW-Jones 2010 Midnight Memphis Sun

Genre: Blues
Rate: 160 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:48:01
Size: 54,92 MB

review by William Ruhlmann
No longer a teenage prodigy, Canadian blues guitarist JW-Jones is pushing 30, and on his sixth album, Midnight Memphis Sun, he has decided to emphasize his fidelity to tradition, partially recording the disc in Sun Studio in Memphis, TN, and having veterans Charlie Musselwhite and Hubert Sumlin guest on three tracks each. Like many latter-day blues revivalists, Jones doesn't hew to any one style of the blues, preferring to move from one subgenre to another on each song. "Off the Market," the opening track, with its punchy horns, initially suggests that he might have wanted to record in the Stax Studio (if it still existed) instead of the Sun Studio; Lowell Fulson's "Love Grows Cold," which follows, is in a jump blues style; "Right on Time" has a ‘50s R&B sound; Jimmy Reed's "I Don't Go for That" recalls Howlin' Wolf-style Chicago blues; "Mean Streak" nods to Delta blues; and "Make a Move" is arranged like a B.B. King song. The majority of the compositions are Jones originals, although the tunes are so steeped in tradition that it's hard to think of them as new. With his co-writer, Tim Wynne-Jones, Jones seems to have been reading the newspapers since his last album, 2008's Bluelisted, as he tries to steer clear of the housing crisis in "Off the Market," singing, "Don't wanna go sub-prime," and devotes "Born Operator" to condemning Wall Street criminal Bernie Madoff and his "Ponzi schemes." As usual, Jones is more of a guitarist than a singer, not because his voice is bad, but because, with its clear tenor sound (which often recalls Edgar Winter), it sounds more like a pop voice than a blues voice. But then, this is a musician who thinks it's possible to turn fellow countryman Bryan Adams into a blues artist, treating the hit "Cuts Like a Knife" as if it were a blues song. Ten years into his recording career, Jones remains a talented mimic in search of his own style.

Gifted vocalist Monica Parker is at her best when she relaxes and lets her talent flow naturally. Here, though, she is placed in contexts that favor aggression over subtlety.... The opener is a roadhouse flag-waver shot through with a searing, metallic guitar line and embellished by ballsy horn riffs.... Monica's roaring vocal navigates the melodic terrain with grace and dexterity, but her emotional range is strictly one-note.... The a cappella gospel closer, a heartfelt tribute to inspiration and faith, shows off Monica's voice at its most expressive and pristine; it's another indication that she is a gifted singer.... Highway 2005 Nine Fine Wines

Genre: Southern Rock
Rate: 192 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:32:10
Size: 44,16 MB

Album Notes
Highway originated in The Region, a tough blue-collar area southeast of Chicago where hundreds of bands battle for exposure and gigs. They have risen to the challenge, delivering powerful onstage shows week after week, year after year. Highway has tapped into the primal source of rock music, the blues, and followed its evolution through seminal bands such as The Allman Brothers Band, The Rolling Stones and Cream. Their original music acknowledges their musical debt to these bands without sacrificing passion and freshness.
Highway has further distinguished itself by playing the GABBA Fest in Macon Georgia. They have shared the stage with Jackyl and Lynyrd Skynyrd and played the Tommy Jeans stage at Chicago's Tweeter Center. Their original songs have been aired on WXRT Radio in Chicago and KOOL 101.9 Radio in Indianapolis.
Seeing Highway live, the first impression is that there is no star in Highway- in truth, every member of the band is a born rock star. Vocalist David Varella sings with the passion of BB King, Ray Charles and Greg Allman. Brothers John and Jim Bonick blaze on guitars. Blending their two instruments into one, they invoke Keith Richards and Brian Jones on those great early Stones records.
Tim Dailey's bass- playing is equal parts Bootsy Collins and Paul McCartney- funky and melodic. Drummer Corie Wilcox approaches the drum kit with the swing of Charlie Watts and the power of John 'Bonzo' Bonham. He is the real thing. Classically trained keyboardist Rick Hemphill provides the icing on the cake, and an air of sophistication to the raw rock and roll sound of Highway. All the members write great songs, and all contribute harmonies.
Talented and hard working, yes, but Highway is also a good-time rock and roll band. A Highway show is a party. They bring back the good times when rock 'n' roll songs you could dance to and sing along with wasn't too much to ask.

Doug James 2001 Blow Mr. Low

Genre: Blues
Rate: 256 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:48:07
Size: 88,07 MB

review by Bob Gottlieb
This baritone sax player searches out that lowest down, deepest bottom-end of the music that can be found in any horn section, and then takes the listener on a tour of those depths. He does this not in the jazz idiom where it is more common, though his playing shows great influences of jazz, but with the blues.
You can hear shades of Paul Williams and Bobby Smith in his playing (they jumped and boogied in the late '40s and early '50s). He's played with and anchored Roomful of Blues, Duke Robillard's band, and on many sessions for such as Big Joe Turner, Eddy Clearwater, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, to name but a few. He is well-respected as an arranger, producer, and engineer. He has written four of the ten songs (and co-wrote one other with Duke Robillard), and this is the first CD in his name; he is in the front as the bandleader and co-producer. He grabbed a few of his friends to help him out, which they do with great effect. Duke Robillard provides guitar and the vocals on two of the cuts, including the title cut, which he wrote to honor Doug James and his nickname, Blow Mr. Low. Sugar Ray Norcia, former frontman for Roomful of Blues, takes the lead vocals on two numbers also.
This is a solid and full effort from one of the finest horn players who is recording today. It jumps, shake, and has that deep-down soul that many only dream of achieving.

Ibro Lolov & His Gypsy Orchestra 2000 Gypsy Music From Bulgaria, Vol. 2

Genre: Gypsy
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:46:34
Size: 106,45 MB

Sista Monica 2001 Gimme That Old Time Religion

Genre: Blues
Rate: 256 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:45:25
Size: 83,15 MB

Gospel and blues musician Sista Monica is one of those mult-talented performers who has a calling and a message in her music. It is clear from the opening of her song titled "Walk Around Heaven All Day" that this is a deep-rooted gospel and blues song that will touch, and send a bone chilling experience all over your body. Sista Monica is a genuine musician who speaks from her heart and soul. If you love Etta James you are going to love Sista Monica as her essence and presence is strong to compare the two.
Sista Monica has performed across the USA and Europe. She has performed for former President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hilary Clinton. She has also been nominated for a W.C. Handy Award the highest appraise in the blues music industry a musician can receive.
The overall CD by Sista Monica demonstrated her strong sense of culture and respect to the gospel music in which she is grounded.
Sista Monica Parker has finally produced and recorded her first traditional gospel music CD entitled "Gimme That Old Time Religion". This is the one that people have been waiting for years to hear and enjoy. It's now available and can be purchased on-line at Amazon.com and fine retailers as of June 26, 2001. This CD captures the enduring qualities of good old time, hand-clapping gospel music filled with spirit and congregational singing. The musical simplicity allows her voice to deliver the power. This release is reminiscent of songs played on the radio in the mornings while her mother braided her hair and prepared her for Sunday school. Parker grew up inspired by singers such as Mahalia Jackson, Mavis Staples, Rev. James Cleveland, Lynette Hawkins, Dorothy Love Coates and many other gospel greats.
Monica Parker was born and raised in Gary, Indiana, graduated from West Side High School and used her G.I. benefits she pursued her B.A. at Indiana University in Business Management with emphasis in Marketing. She started singing at age 7 as a member of The Great Band Missionary Baptist Church Choir. In 1972 at age 16 she attended Miracle Temple Church Of God In Christ (C.O.G.I.C) offering a strong alto voice to this spirit-filled choir. After three years in the U. S. Marine Corps with an honorable discharge for being a recruiting sergeant, Parker returned to the Midwest residing in Chicago, Illinois. She was then 25 years of age. She attended Life Center Universal Awareness Church singing harmonies in the choir. In 1987, she relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area and joined Life Center Ministries in Oakland under Pastor Walter Hawkins. She enjoyed singing for a short time in the Edwin Hawkins Music & Arts Seminar Choir until she moved to Santa Cruz, California in 1991.
To offset her musical career she has been an engineering executive recruiter and consultant for high tech corporations in the Silicon Valley for 14 years. As a choir member Monica Parker had never sang solo or led songs in front of a group. At the age of 36, she decided to balance her life from the rigors of corporate America she after seeing M.C. Hammer on the Arsenio Hall show. She bought a microphone and started a band in 1992. Three years later she became a singer/songwriter with her first CD "Get Out My Way" ending with a moving acapella version of "Precious Lord Take My Hand". Sista Monica Parker soon developed a tremendous global following attributed to her dynamic stage presence and charisma when connecting with the audience. Now, almost a decade later, she is considered a show-stopping festival favorite touring the world as an international recording artist with other award winning CDs. The add to her catalog of CDs is the self-titled 1997 release "Sista Monica", the 2000 release "People Love The Blues" and the 2001 release "Sista Monica Live In Europe."
Since 1995 Monica Parker has produced and released 5 CDs on her Mo Muscle Records & Entertainment record label located in Santa Cruz, California. Known for her deep and rich contralto voice, she sings mostly original gospel-influenced Blues and Soul. She has won numerous awards and has traveled around the world entertaining audiences in Turkey, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Norway, Great Britain, Mexico City and the U. S. She includes a gospel song while in concert and on her each of her CDs - never forgetting her roots. Sista Monica has shared the stage at major festivals with legends such as Al Green, BB King, The Temptations, Mavis Staples & The Staples Singers, Gladys Knight, the late John Lee Hooker, Dr. John, Taj Mahal and many other Grammy Award winning artists.
"Gimme That Old Time Religion" took two years in the studio to complete between tours. "I felt like the Pied Piper gathering voices and musicians to produce this compilation says Sista Monica. In 1999, Ken "Big Papa" Baker her tenor sax player and a dear friend suddenly passed away. Humming and singing the gospel songs of yester-years, plus the support of friends from all parts of the Bay Area helped to heal her sorrowed heart. The CD features Kate Alm-piano player and musical director for the Calvary Episcopal Children's Choir of Santa Cruz. She directed 16 children ages ranging from ages 3 to 11 that sang on "He's Got The Whole In His Hands". Kate also played on "Down By the River Side", "Bye & Bye", "Gimme That Old Time Religion" and other traditional gospel favorites. John Turk - Music Director of the Glide Memorial United Methodist Church Choir located in San Francisco, California plays a heart-felt piano on Rev. James Cleveland's "Walk Around Heaven All Day". Tim Landis also from Glide Memorial played lead guitar on each track. Ron E. Beck, co-producer and drummer sang tenor in the choir. Bill Bosch played upright acoustic bass, a visually impaired Dayan Kai played New Orleans style clarinet on "When The Saints Go Marching In" along with Art Alm-tuba, Noel Catura tenor sax and Eddie Ramirez on trumpet to round out the brass section. Jackie Gainey of Richmond Temple C.O.G.I.C. offered a high-spirited Hammond B3 organ throughout the CD and most remarkably on the title track. The Adult Choir singers included Rebecca Adams, Ann Peden, Shiela Truso, Arron Woods, August O'Connor, Tammy Brown, Ron E. Beck, Donisha Leggett, Scarlett McKinley, Rolesa Smith, Tanya Fitzgerald, Vince Harris, Tony Howard, Leslie Mixon, Shelton Crutch, Janet Crutch and Kate Alm. Sista Monica led and directed the adult choir.
"A feeling of joy comes to my heart when I sings gospel, and while some of the songs speak of the future and the hereafter, they give me happiness and hope for a better day right now. I love all types of music, however with all its truth and humility, there is nothing that goes deeper and does my heart better than singing some traditional gospel songs" says Sista Monica Parker. Mark May & The Agitators 1995 Call On The Blues

review by Hobart Rowland
Not only did Mark May's 1995 debut, Call on the Blues, please blues fans and critics, it earned him a tryout with the Allman Brothers. A mutual friend turned former Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts on to May's album -- and while May didn't get the gig, he did open for the band on a few occasions. Betts was most impressed by May's singing -- and for good reason. Throughout Call on the Blues, May's chameleon-like vocals toy with the color barrier, fluctuating effortlessly between a salty redneck drawl and a silky R&B croon not unlike Robert Cray's. On guitar, he boasts a barbed precision that recalls the late Albert Collins, the sort of full-on command of his instrument -- equal parts raw feel and technical polish -- that can't be fudged. Maybe that's why May has earned the respect of Joe "Guitar" Hughes, a childhood friend of the Collins. Hughes even lent his six-string expertise to Call on the Blues' instrumental tribute to Collins, "Hail to the Iceman."

SBB 1980 Memento Z Banalnym Tryptykiem

Genre: Progressive Rock

Time: 00:51:32

Possibly the greatest thing to come out of Eastern Europe, ever.
The Good: If anyone ever asked me to define prog rock I would tell them to listen to this album. It's as symphonic as it is eclectic as it is flawless. Although they regrouped many years later, this was effectively SBB's swan song and talk about leaving the best till last! It was also the first and only to include Slawomir Piwowar in the line-up.
The album opener is absolutely stunning and overflows with energy and ideas whilst remaining more fluent than a lubricated frying pan. The following track is a tale of two, equally good, halves. For the most part its dominated by wonderful acoustic guitar and accompanied by some rather melancholic vocals, but by the end it evolves completely as the electric guitar takes center stage for a truly majestic solo. The third track is a brilliant little instrumental number with a bluesy edge, but sadly it ends almost as soon as it starts. However, all is not lost, because the fourth and final track is simply mindblowing! A sprawling twenty minute epic in a similar vein to their earlier works, and a truly phenomenal composition. There are so many contrasting parts ranging from pompous organs to folky choruses to psychedelic interludes, and yet they all just fit together seamlessly, like some sort of magical jigsaw.
The album closes with the same orchestral passage it opens with, which always leaves me with the desire to go back to the beginning and listen to it all over again.
The Bad: I can never remember how to spell any of the songs.
The Verdict: Banal by name, absolutely bangin' by nature! (Starhammer )
