The Burnt River band has been playing non-stop since it's first gig on New Years Eve 1976.This year marks our 34 year anniversary. Starting out like any other blues band playing neighborhood bars, being into Harley's as well as the blues, they developed a party hard, house rockin' style of boogie music.

As the word started to get around, so did the band. It's taken years of dedication, and a genuine desire to boogie, and tens of thousands of miles. Burnt River has carved out it's own circuit.

While holding down day jobs, they have managed to play from Boston to San Francisco and Canada to Ft. Lauderdale. The majority of the shows are motorcycle events. They have not missed playing in Sturgis as one of the house bands at the Buffalochip since 1984, the house band at Pub 44 in Daytona since 1988 (according to Gilly the owner, they have a life time contract), and going back to the American Motorcycle Jamboree in upstate New York (18th year).

The Burnt River Band continues to play the Abate State conventions for New York, Ohio, Iowa, Pennsylvania, in Canada for the Brotherhood of Toronto (11 years), the Louie Run (all of them), Viet Nam Vets M.C. parties, and countless local, regional, national and international, motorcycle club parties, swap meets, BBQ's, weddings, prison bike shows, and Easy Rider rodeos, including the nationals in Ventura California.

The Burnt River Band has shared the stage with groups like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steppenwolf, The Doobie Brothers, David Crosby, Marshall Tucker, The Stray Cats, Confederate Railroad, Mitch Ryder, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Johnny Winter,The Nighthawks, David Allen Coe, Rick Derringer, Molly Hatchet, Johnny Paycheck,The Fabulous Thunder Birds, Charlie Daniels, and many others! Fully capable of performing as a one-man band, Richard Johnston is an anomaly in the music industry. After having Robert Johnson songs imbedded into his subconscious mind by his roommate while attending college in California, he started to learn the open tunings of the delta bluesmen. Naturally, this meant that his next move was to. Japan, where he played for several years before returning to the US and the Memphis TN/North Mississippi area in particular. It was in Memphis where he won the prestigious 17th Annual Blues Foundation's International Blues Talent Competition and captured the Albert King Award for the most promising guitar player in the competition at the same time. (The first double crown in seventeen years.) Since then, he has played in three countries and been seen on national television in two of them. He has had his name in print in blues society newsletters all over the world and has accomplished all of this on his own, without a record or a recording contract.

Ever wary of record companies, their oftentimes dubious financial practices and dark clouds of forced commercialization and potential loss of personal integrity looming over them, Richard has carried his musical soul through the maze of record company promises and deception with his focus directed on the music and his fans. Untouched and unfettered by the constraints of a faceless money hungry musical Godzilla, "Foot Hill Stomp" is Richard Johnston's musical vision captured on CD FTRC.

Loaded with standards from the North Mississippi Hill Country, the locomotive power of "Foot Hill Stomp" has the raw rhythmic drive of a primal entity that will infuse itself into the dark primitive recesses of your primordial senses. Possessing a voice that is "at times" somewhat reminiscent of a young Billy Gibbons, (... should I say that? Listen to "Come On In"). Richard has the vocal ability to do a solid job singing and his multi-instrumental prowess is exceptional. He pulls off the complicated NMHC style with apparent ease, as well as the approval of the legendary Jessie Mae Hemphill, who accompanies Richard with the tambourine on several of the songs and shares writing credits and sings with him on "Chicken and Gravy." This familiarity with the North Mississippi Hill Country style (The Hemphill family, Eli Green, Fred McDowell, Rainey Burnette, Junior Kimbrough, R.L. Burnside .) came about when he was immersed in the scene after joining the "Soul Blues Boys" (Junior's band) and literally began performing the hill country music while he learned it in what he has called, "...the best period of my life."

His years as a North Mississippi Hill Country blues journeyman and Beale Street performer have paid off and he has now caught up with himself as is evidenced here on "Foot Hill Stomp." The CD begins with the infectious "Miss Maebelle," a song written by Rainey Burnette, made famous by R.L. Burnside, and re-arranged here by Richard. The driving groove created at the beginning is almost reminiscent of a Chuck Berry styled song before it morphs into a "Shake "Em On Down" motif. Next is the classic Junior Kimbrough song, "Do the Romp." With it's own laid back pulse, Richard, Mark Simpson, and Tony Ray Adams hold the primal urging of the original deep rhythm, raw and intact. "Do the Romp" is followed by another traditional song Richard learned from Mr. Burnette titled, "Coal Black Mattie and two more Junior Kimbrough songs (with a few traditional parts), all rearranged by Richard. He subsequently breaks down R.L. Burnside's, "Come On In" to a raw and raucous state with Robert "Nighthawk" Tooms blowing a pseudo "Led Zeppelin" sounding harp (i.e. "When the Levee Breaks") and the self-taught and imaginative Cedric Burnside sitting in with his expressive drumming. (Cedric plays drums on "Come On In" and "Work Me Baby" while Robert plays harp on "Come On In" and "Miss Maebelle.")

On the seventh of the nine songs, Jessie Mae Hemphill joins Richard on the tambourine and vocal encouragement for a speeded up version of Rev. Robert Wilkins, "That's No Way To Get Along." Following this is "The Shaggy Hound," which is credited to Do-Boy Diamond. This title and credit is confusing because Richard begins with several phrases from Do-Boy's "Going Away Blues" and continues with phrases from other traditional songs. (.And perhaps a line or two of his own) Meanwhile his accompanying music is nothing like "The Shaggy Hound," "Going Away Blues," or any other Do-Boy Diamond song I could find. Actually, the only similarity I noticed with Do-Boy's "The Shaggy Hound" is a single lyrical phrase near the end of the song. (All of this is really a moot point anyway because it's still a great tune, regardless of the writing credit.)

A special treat concludes "Foot Hill Stomp" when the illustrious Jessie Mae Hemphill joins in on the vocals. While her post-stroke voice isn't quite as strong as it used to be, her glowing inner spark is still alive and well and it's a pleasure to hear her again as she states at the end of the song, ".No, I wasn't through!"

Richard Johnston's "Foot Hill Stomp," is a barefoot rompin' stompin' rhythmic journey through the Hill Country of North Mississippi and the credits read like a "Who's Who" of local legends. Richard definitely has his pulse on the primal locomotive energy and ragged guttural country drive of the music and it explodes off the tracks like a thunderous train. Richard 's excellent vocals are blended with his versatile musicianship as he integrates his own musical influences with those from the Hill Country. Among the instruments he plays are the foot drums, the resonator guitar with his own built in electric scratch plate, the washboard, a bass guitar, a regular guitar, and a Lowe Bow - Hill Harp. The inventor of the Lowe Bow brand, John Lowe, and Richard Johnston designed the Lowe Bow - Hill Harp. The Hill Harp is this particular model's name and is a diddley-bow type stringed instrument that looks like two broomsticks sticking out of a cigar box. One neck has a bass string and the other neck has three strings for a fretless bass/baritone guitar. Each neck has it's own pickup with the bass neck plugged into a bass amp and the other neck into a guitar amp. (This review is copyright © 2002 by Stephen T. Davidson, and Blues On Stage at: www.mnblues.com)

De B.J. Hegen Blues Band is een Nederlandse bluesgroep die eind jaren zeventig wordt opgericht door B.J. Hegen en drummer Will Drenth.

B.J. HEGEN: zang, gitaar, harmonica
ERIC ZUIDEMA: gitaar
CYNTHIO OOMS: bas
WILLEM DRENTH: drums

In 1992 komen we zowel Will Drent als Cynthio Ooms tegen bij de formatie Lefthand Freddy & the Aces.

In 2000 treffen we Willem Drenth aan in de bluesformatie Bluesville ()

No-one rocks the Blues like Michael Katon. This release was the album that really kick-started Michaels career and let the world know that a new Guitar hero was on the prowl. Opening Instrumental "Wake up Call" does just that. It will Wake you up and get your head banging to this wild driving Boogie. As one other reviewer pointed out, there are some average (Filler) tracks on here, and this is the case with most Katon albums. I deduct one star for this reason alone. There will also be plenty of Cliched macho lyrics about whisky, hard living etc to boot, but at the same time, Michael always has a great sense of humour, and more importantly, a great love for his music.

Other favourites on the album is the title track "Boogie Train". It starts with a slow teasing boogie riff and a wispy vocal, and then climaxes into a thunderous loud heavy boogie and continues throughout with a pulsating beat. "Rock me till the hounds come home" is another great rocker. "Every girl I see" i had only previously heard from similar Aussie Blues Boogie merchant , Dave Hole, but Michaels version tops that one hands down. Finally, check out "Roadtested". Here is another out and out Boogie Rocker that starts with the Elmore James Trademark Slide Intro (i.e. Dust my Broom etc) and then Michael makes it his own song. Nice slow heavy Blues also feature on the album. Michael regularly did Acoustic sessions on U.K. Radio with Bob Harris, Richard Skinner etc and played this track acoustically as well as "Stop breaking down" etc.

I sometimes think though that Michael, after numerous heavy Boogie albums, and they are getting heavier and louder with each release, should go back to his roots and deliver an album of traditional blues of his influences and heroes. Maybe more Blues enthusiasts would then take him seriously.

Southern Rock is alive and well! This might sound like a total anachronism to more trend-oriented music lovers, but it's pretty clear these days that there is hardly any other musical genre as healthy as the down-to-earth classic rock being made by Southeners from Texas to Florida. Of course this is mainly due to the fact that there is a very enthusiastic scene of fans supporting this music that they have chosen as their way of life. One of the most recent examples for the immense vitality of Southern Rock are Tim Brooks & The Alien Sharecroppers from Macon, Georgia. A new release on TAXIM's DARK REIGN subsidiary, their debut album SEE ROCK CITY is finally available. Bandleader Tim Brooks has made some pretty impressive waves in terms of his guitar-playing prowess already. This is mainly due to his phenomenal success with Guitar Player magazine's spectacular "25th Anniversary Ultimate Competition". Not only did he win the "slide guitar" category with a two-minute demo featuring some out-of-this-world slide playing. The high-calibre jury was so impressed by Tim's playing that they awarded him the grand prize of all twelve categories as well. And so it happened that Tim Brooks was featured in the accompanying "Ultimate Guitar Concert" at San Francisco's Warfield Theatre, standing and performing side by side with legends like Steve Morse, Ry Cooder, Harvey Mandel, John Lee Hooker and Gregg Allman ("Tim Brooks brought the house down" GP editor Dominic Milano). A pretty impressive cast and certainly a night to be remembered!

But Tim Brooks is not a newcomer to the Southern music scene. In 1994 he and his brother Greg released an album as "The Brothers Brooks" and he has extensively paid his dues as opening act for artists ranging from Muddy Waters to Steve Morse and jamming with many Southern artists associated with the legendary Capricorn label like Dickey Betts or The (Dixie) Dregs. Special importance in terms of influences to Tim Brooks must be placed on one band in partiular: The Allman Brothers Band. No other player has so profoundly inspired and influenced Tim's musical vision as the late Duane Allman. And so this giant of a man from Macon, GA is continuing the Allman guitar-playing tradition in a very dedicated fashion. His main axe being a Gibson Les Paul Custom, Tim Brooks' (slide) playing is not sweet, but bears the heavy imprint of Southern blues/rock fire instead - just like Duane's. This is the sound Tim Brooks is in love with and this fire is what he is trying to put across in his performances. And he knows what he's doing.

SEE ROCK CITY presents a six-piece band that offers a blues-infused flashback of classic rock and roll iced with new twists and turns that will put this idiom into the new millenium. Besides a bunch of heavy-blooded original songs, the album also features a cover of John Hiatt's "Stand Still" and three fantastic cover versions of lesser known songs written by Bob Dylan:"Blind Willie McTell" (a secret cult classic amongst Dylan-fans), as well as the stomping "Foot Of Pride" and the blues-based "Down Along The Cove". With a vocal style reminiscent of ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons and Gregg Allman, Tim Brooks is apparently fusing almost intuitively a number of Southern musical styles. Because despite of the tough-guy attitude, there are hints of funk rhythms and country soul vocal intensity to be found throughout this album.

So "Rock City" in this case is Macon, GA, hometown to Little Richard, Otis Redding and of course The Allman Brothers Band. A pretty impressive musical history, for sure. And even if the comic-book humor on display on the cover reminds a little of ZZ Top's weirdo jokery - musically SEE ROCK CITY really gets down to business. (http://www.noguru.com)

review by Hal Horowitz

Six years after his successful tribute to Peter Green, Gary Moore follows with another solid electric blues-rock effort that falls squarely in line with his similarly themed albums Still Got the Blues, After Hours, and Blues Alive. Although he adds brass on a rollicking version of B.B. King's "You Upset Me Baby," Moore predominantly sticks to the basics here, pounding out energetic and full-bodied blues-rock and leading a stripped-down trio with a journeyman's enthusiasm and his trademark thick, sustained guitar solos slashing through the proceedings.

The majority of the tracks are originals, although even the best of them sound suspiciously like rewritten blues standards. "Cold Black Night" is little more than a speeded-up "Messin' With the Kid," and "Picture of the Moon" sounds awfully similar to Moore's own "Still Got the Blues." And whether the world needs yet another version of "Stormy Monday" or "I Ain't Got You" is debatable. But Moore pulls off even the most clichéd material with his phenomenal prowess; supple, identifiable vocals; and a guitar tone that effortlessly shifts from a Santana/Peter Green-styled hovering intensity to a slashing Stevie Ray Vaughan attack.

While Moore isn't redefining the genre or even his own approach to it, he's adding his stamp to blues-rock with Back to the Blues. Consistently rugged, moving, and heartfelt, the album is a reminder that even without reinventing an established musical style, an artist can effectively work within its boundaries to produce a satisfying, if not quite fresh, interpretation relying solely on talent and passion.

This guitarist and singer was a “blues man” of the first water. With an irresistible aura, he literally celebrates his music, which ranges from soul cuts such as “Louisiana On My Mind” to blues jumps (“Down On San Pablo Ave”), traditional acoustic pickings (“Rebel”) and slide playing (“Little Miss Behaver”), all the way to powerful blues-rocks (“Lonesome Highway”). Frank Biner amalgamates tradition and zeitgeist in “Fixin’ To Jam” to form a perfect unity that means pure fun. One might wish for a chromed sparkling limo to get on the road and travel endless highways, with the Frank Biner CD and the loudspeakers playing full blast. (http://www.acoustic-music.de)

The Monterey International Pop Music Festival was a three-day concert event held June 16 to June 18, 1967 at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California. Monterey was the first widely promoted and heavily attended rock festival, attracting an estimated 55,000 total attendees with up to 90,000 people present at the event's peak at midnight on Sunday.

The festival is remembered for the first major American appearances by Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Ravi Shankar, the first large-scale public performance of Janis Joplin, and the introduction of Otis Redding to a large, predominantly white audience.

The Monterey Pop Festival embodied the themes of California as a focal point for the counterculture and is generally regarded as one of the beginnings of the "Summer of Love" in 1967, along with the Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival held at Mount Tamalpais in Marin County a week earlier. Monterey became the template for future music festivals, notably the Woodstock Festival two years later. (wikipedia)
